Kilroy Owns the Night: Day 29 (Triumph)

Gallowglass Transfer Station was named for its purpose. Cargo ships could dock there and use a cargo-transfer portal to teleport merchandise across the cosmos. Standing before the Still, my brain nano kicked into gear when I realized The Tempting Fate was docked at a cargo-transfer portal.
“The Still needs organic material,” I explained to Mercury. “So, we give it something else to chew on.”
“Like what?” she asked.
“Dinner.” I pointed at a crate marked EMERGENCY RATIONS.
Max grabbed my shoulder. “You're not destroying that device!”
“Relax, Anagram Boy. I'm relocating it.”
I tapped the coordinates into the cargo-transfer portal keypad. Somewhere in the galaxy was the perfect place for the Still to reside for safekeeping. I activated the portal. A shimmering blue doorway appeared beside the Still. Mercury shoved the emergency rations into the resonance chamber. The Still hummed appreciatively. My nanochip counted down.
“Thirty seconds,” I announced. I disengaged the chamber's containment field and activated the cargo conveyor.
The Still lurched forward, spilling bourbon across the floor. Mercury grabbed my arm.
“Kilroy!”
“Trust me!”
“I don’t even know you!”
The conveyor carried the Still through the portal. A flash of blue light illuminated the chamber. Then silence. The ship stopped shaking. I raised my arms in triumph.
“I own the night!”
Mercury slugged my arm.
“You sent a dangerous device out into the unknown.”
“Nah,” I said. It’s safe.” Before I could answer, he cockpit intercom crackled.
“Emergency launch initiated,” Vrex announced.
Mercury's eyes narrowed. “Oh, hell no.”
