“So where are headed, anyway, Ms. Dirty Deeds?” I asked Mercury.

“You need to clean your ship, dude.” She tossed the empty Plorps wrapper into the floorboard where I had a nice collection of discarded food containers, drink cups and a couple of wrenches. Yeah, I’m messy but science shows a messy desk (or van) is linked to higher creativity and unconventional thinking. I’m nothing if not unconventional.

“No can do. I’m an unconventional thinker.” I chomped on a potato skin.

“To answer your question,” Mercury said. “We need to figure out where they’re going to be, right? Isn’t that how Clovis’s Ocular Oracle works?”

My brain nano kicked into high gear.

“It’s a wacky device, man. The Oracle calculates a place where we’ll have a high probability of occupying the same space. It provides coordinates and a probability of convergence.”

“Did you happen to get those coordinates from Clovis?” she asked.

“I did not,” I reluctantly admitted. “Admittedly, a faux pas.”

“Some of that unconventional thinking in action.” Mercury pulled a hand-held device from her vest pocket and typed in some coordinates.

“What’s that?” I asked.

“My handy-dandy notebook. Lucky for you, I asked Clovis about the coordinates. We need to head to Gallowglass Transfer, Sector 9. Does this heap access portals?”

“Like a champ,” I said.

My brain nano kicked in again. Gallowglass was a favorite refueling stop for Junkcruisers because the operators didn’t ask questions. If the Oracle was right, we would meet up with the Encyclopedia there.
